Lata Mangeshkar

The voice of Lata Mangeshkar represents supreme and pristine quality of Indian music. She is undoubtedly the greatest playback singer in the Hindi film industry. She has sung all forms of music like ghazals, songs, bhajans and even folk songs. In her lifetime, she has recorded no less than 50,000 songs. Lata Mangeshkar has also rendered her voice in other regional languages like Tamil, Bengali, and Malayalam etc. It is said that she has sung in more than twenty regional languages and over a thousand Hindi movies.

Lata Mangeshkar has recorded duets with all the top most singers. From legends of yesteryear like Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Kishore Kumar to stars of current crop like Kumar Shanu, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Kunal Ganjawala etc, Lata has sung with all of them with same comfort and excellence.

It is no less than impossible to think of listing all the hit songs of Lata Mangeshkar. She came into prominence with Aayega Aanewaala from the movie Mahal (1949). She has given thousand of hits in every era since 40s to first decade of the new millennium. Her initial hits were songs like,

First song which got her noticed was ‘Dil Mera Toda’. Thios song can be safely ermed as her ticket to fame and destiny. Since then, it has been a memorable journey for her. She never looked back afterwards. 1949 saw Lata Mangeshkar climbing to the top with four major hits Dulari, Barsaat, Andaaz, and Mahal. Who can forget that famous song “Aayega Aanewala” from movie ‘Mahal’. Touted as one of the biggest hits of that year, she kept giving one hit after another. Her high pictchd voice completely transformed the industry. Her contemporaries started vanishing and she became the first choice singer of almost all the major names. Late 50’s saw arrival of her younger sister, Asha Bhosle and together they became a potent force to reckon with.  


Lata mangeshkar gave many historical hits which still ring a bell in our ears. She sung with almost all the famous names including, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Hemant, Manna Dey etc. her versatility can be seen and heard in almost all the genres. She has sung folk, romantic, melodious, bhajans, qawwalis and what not! She also became one of the most powerful names in the industry and every music director worth his salt wanted to work with her.


Honored with numerous national and international awards, Lata Mangeshkar has also won highest civilian award in India, Bharat Ratna. She is only second singer after M.S Subbulakshmi in the non-classical category in India to have received this award. Apart from that, she has won three national awards and eight filmfare awards. The number of awads could have been more had she not stopped accepting awards so that new talents could be promoted. A living legend in every sense, she has a divine talent.

Whenever we talk about Hindi film music, the first name which comes to our mind is Lata Mangeshkar. One of the best singers of the Hindi film industry and appreciated all over India, she has a unique record in her name. She is the most recorded artist in the Guinness Book of World Records. According to a rough estimate, she has sung more than 30,000 solo and duet songs in astonishing 20 different languages from 1948 to 1987. A real gem of a record.


Fondly known as nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28th September, 1929 in Indore (M.P). She had inherited musical genes from her father Dinanath Mangeshkar who was an acclaimed classical singer. Introduced to music at a very young age, Lata Mangeshkar truly rules the hearts of Indian music lovers.


Her father passed away when she was still very young. Therafter, she took the responsibility of her young siblings on her fragile shoulders. She began her journey by acting in few movies during 1942 to 1948. She acted in 8 films. Her tryst with singing immortality began with a Marathi film named Kiti Hasaal (1942). This film saw arrival of Lata Mangeshkar, the singer. Hindi movie, ‘Aap ke Sewa Main (1947)’ witnessed her debut in Hindi film industry. She took quite some time to establish herself and her melodious voice in film industry because of dominance of other established singers like, Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum and Zohrabai Ambalewali etc.
